The world's largest breeding site for the Chinese Crested Tern

Once the Chinese Crested Tern was discovered to be breeding on Matsu in 2000, an international tern preservation area was established.


In order to protect this critically-endangered species, the eight uninhabi ted islands of Bai Temple, Zhongdao, Sanlian, and Tiejian (Beigan Township); Jinyu and Liuquan Reef (Nangan Township); and Sheshan (Juguang Township) became part of the 60-hectare Matsu Islands Tern Refuge.


The main species under protection are the Bridled Tern, Roseate Tern, Black-naped Tern, Crested Tern, Black-tailed Gull, Reef Egret, and Fork-tailed Swift.

* Please arrive at the pier 30 minutes before launch and after having obtained tour information. A tour guide will speak about the tour before launch.

* Weather conditions may vary; please wear suitable clothing.

* For your safety, please wear a life jacket.

* Please bring your own eating and drinking utensils.

* No hunting, trapping, killing, disturbing, mistreating or feeding the birds. Do not take or destroy bird eggs.
