As many of Matsu’s early residents came from areas such as Lianchiang and Changle in China’s Fujian Province, Matsu is the proud owner of much architecture in the style of eastern Fujian.
This style includes the brightly-colored, fire-shaped “firesealing walls” used on temples, as well as the plainer water-themed fire-sealing walls built in residential houses. The traditional stone houses are mostly built from yellow granite from Matsu or bluestone sourced from China.
The buildings are square in shape and therefore remind Chinese people of name chops. Matsu can be considered to own the world’s bestpreserved examples of eastern Fujian architecture.
The four preservation areas of Jinsha Village, Qinbi Village, Dapu Village, and Fuzheng Village were established in the 1980s, with local authorities allocating considerable resources to the promotion of the preservation effort. Niujiao Village and Qinbi Village have been particularly successful in terms of developing tourism and private business.
